Fancy a Bermuda Float?

Sounds yummy, doesn’t it? Frosty root beer bubbling up in your pre-chilled mug. Even better, you can have this concoction anywhere you can find it: root beer is a bit of an acquired taste, but when you love it, there is no turning back. So, above and beyond the puns, this is a real thing: Bermuda appears to float. According to ABC news, this phenomenon is true. Scientists’ discovery may be the answer. Click here.

Seismologists have made a fascinating discovery about what lies beneath the Bermuda — a never-before-seen plume of rock that makes the archipelago appear to float in the middle of the ocean, according to a paper published last month in Geophysical Research Letters. Bermuda is the remnant of an ancient volcano that stopped erupting about 30 to 35 million years ago. Most mid-ocean volcanic islands, like those in the Hawaiian chain, follow a predictable pattern:

They form over a hot spot (a thermal plume rising from the deep mantle). As the tectonic plate moves, the volcano drifts away from the hot spot, volcanism stops, and the crust cools. It gets a bit techy from here, but it’s true. Read more above and head on out for fun in Bermuda.
