The Civil War. Again?

It’s December 2025 as we create this post, and much of the world is in turmoil. More than some of it has been instigated by (at this time) Donald Trump. If you keep up with the news, you’ll be well aware of what’s been going on. But, with that noise clouding the atmosphere, it’s sometimes good to pause, look back and realise that this is not a new phenomenon. Wikipedia notes: The United States has only officially declared war five times in the War of 1812, the Mexican–American War, the Spanish–American War, World War I, and World War II. These declarations cover a total of 11 separate instances against specific nations. Only five times?

The United States has engaged in a significant number of conflicts throughout its history (often cited as over 100, depending on the definition of “war” or “military action”). The reasons for this persistent involvement are complex and multifaceted, evolving significantly over time from the nation’s founding to its current role as a global superpower. In its first century and a half, the US fought primarily to define and secure its own borders and internal stability. Territorial Acquisition: This was the main driver of conflict throughout the 19th century.

Wars were fought to expand the nation from the Atlantic to the Pacific, often under the concept of Manifest Destiny—the belief that US expansion across the North American continent was both justified and inevitable. There is plenty to learn about this, much of it online and in libraries. Either way, it’s worth learning more. But, by all means choose the Belmont Mansion Tour.
