Detroit: discover the rustbelt.

In the Midwest parts of America are a number of states that are known as rough and tumble, edgy and perhaps a little bit desperate. But, still they chug onward and persist. One of these places is Detroit, Michigan. Is the largest city in the state of Michigan, USA, and historically, it’s been a significant industrial and economic hub. It gained prominence in the early 20th century as the center of the American automobile industry, earning the nickname “Motor City.”

However, over the latter half of the 20th century, Detroit faced numerous challenges, including economic decline, population loss, and urban decay. Factors such as the decline of the automotive industry, racial tensions, and issues related to municipal governance contributed to the city’s struggles. Detroit filed for bankruptcy in 2013, marking one of the largest municipal bankruptcies in U.S. history.

Despite these positive changes, challenges persist in certain neighborhoods, including issues related to poverty, unemployment, and infrastructure. The city’s recovery is an ongoing process, and various stakeholders are working to address the complex issues that Detroit faces. And, so, perhaps Detroit might be a place for you, too, to discover from the ground up – or in this case, from the top down – using Detroit’s People Mover.
