Those of you who have visited London will also probably have, at the very least, seen the Battersea Power Station – and may even have wandered over and walked around it. You couldn’t avoid it if you took the trains from the southern counties into London Waterloo station. Sadly, it has been many years where the crumbling hulk of that most British of British edifices was exactly that – crumbling, but alarmingly. Probably the most important – and threatened – parts of the building were the immense (and stunning) chimneys. Something needed to be done. Finally, work began in 2014 to painstakingly dismantle and carefully rebuild all chimneys to the precise specification of the originals. Following that The next phase was the shopping mall and entertainment centre that once were engine rooms, which became a mall, art gallery and more. So, now, when you walk by what once was an eyesore to some (but also an emblem to others,) you’ll wonder if you’re even in the correct city. It’s definitely a destination now, for sure. Spectacular.
Never forget, though, that this behemoth was actually a living, breathing, smoke-belching landmark in The Smoke, part of the scenery, and we’re sure many of you would want to know more. Comedian and historian Tony Robinson (he of Blackadder and other British television and film classics) is just as much a geek as the rest of us. So, rather than marvel at the smokestacks themselves, this time, Sir Tony will take you in to the revived innards of the building, where electricity was produced for one of the world’s greatest cities. See below; it’s more interesting than you might think.
