The name Iztaccíhuatl comes from the Nahuatl language and means “White Woman,” referring to the appearance of the snow-covered peaks which resemble a sleeping woman. According to Aztec legend, Iztaccíhuatl was a princess who died of grief believing her lover, Popocatépetl, had been killed in war. The gods turned her into a mountain, and her lover, who returned alive, was transformed into the neighboring volcano, Popocatépetl.
Soon, you’ll arrive at Paso de Cortes, a mountain pass nestled between the mighty guardians of the land, the Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl volcanoes. At 3400 m altitude, the air feels crisp and stimulating. You’ll soon be in La Joya, a mountain hut perched at a breathtaking elevation of 3977 m. Here, surrounded by nature’s splendor, the conquer trek of 4-hours begins towards the snow line of the volcano. As you ascend the slopes of Iztaccihuatl, you’ll be rewarded with the marveling panorama, revealing the awe beauty of the Valley of Mexico and the sight of Popocatepetl, Mexico’s second-tallest volcano.
