And beyond! Tsavo is one of the most captivating safari destinations in the world because of its sheer scale and the distinct “personalities” of its two halves. Located in southeastern Kenya, between the city of Nairobi and the coastal hub of Mombasa, Tsavo East National Park and Tsavo West National Park together form one of the largest game sanctuaries on Earth. It offers a rugged, “old Africa” feel that is harder to find in more manicured parks.
Tsavo is essentially two different worlds separated by the Nairobi-Mombasa highway and the railway. Tsavo East (The Theatre of the Wild): This side is defined by vast, flat semi-arid plains and red dust. It is famous for its “red elephants,” which take on a distinct rusty hue from wallowing in the park’s iron-rich volcanic soil. Mzima Springs (Tsavo West): A crystal-clear oasis where millions of gallons of water gush from under volcanic rocks daily. There is a unique underwater viewing tank where you can watch hippos and crocodiles swimming from a fish-eye perspective. Shetani Lava Flow (Tsavo West): A massive, 200-year-old jagged landscape of black magma.
