Gourmet cooking in the wild

I’ve tried to be a lightweight backpacker, packing my bag with energy bars that look like they came out of a toilet and dehydrated meals that have the consistency of plaster. It didn’t last.

When packing, I think of what J.R.R. Tolken wrote in The Hobbit: “If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world.”

Except I’ve replaced “hoarded gold” with “ultra-light camping gear.”
