Much like bargains at your local specialty shop, once they’re gone, they’re gone. And that goes for building, as well. You will know how much we here at Matouring love architecture – from all around the world. If you travel enough, you get to see the great structures: Taj Mahal, Eifel Tower, Hagia Sophia, the Dancing House in Prague, the Niterói Contemporary Art Museum in Rio. The list goes on and on, and we’re so glad of that.
You’ll also know of our love of Modern design, usually known as MCM, or Mid-Century-Modern. (We have a number of articles discussion this – see here.) So, it’s always a thrill to discover a new one. But, in this case, this rather splendid example of modernist architecture is under threat of being demolished in the name of commerce. The Amado Post Office Building in Palm Springs California was yet another shining example of streamlined, futuristic thinking in a time when the USA was at the forefront of – well, most things. But, unfortunately, time marches on, and sometimes common sense doesn’t. This building is under threat of demolition. Click here for Google Maps images.
We’re writing about this to alert travelers to be aware of this, and visit this singular destination before it (and others of its kind) become dust in the wind.
As the Palm Springs Preservation Foundations states: “Built in 1970 by San Rafael contractor Floyd Allensby, the Amado Post Office Building is an exceptional example of the “New Formalism” style of modernist architecture. The building’s design is highlighted by tall, expressive arches of cast concrete, large expanses of north-facing glass windows, and walls of period porcelain tile. As is often the case across the United States, the architecture of a town’s main post office reflects the dominant architectural style of the surrounding community.”
