And she’s hiking a Stairway to Heaven

We present another one of those “now you see it, now you don’t” posts. Nothing lasts forever, it appears. And sometimes the powers-that-be appear to be deaf to what the people want.

Here, we’re talking about the  Stairway to Heaven Trail on Oʻahu, Hawaii, the Haʻikū Stairs. Also known as the Stairway to Heaven or Haʻikū Ladder, it is a steep, steel step structure that provided pedestrian access to former U.S. Navy communication facilities on the island of OʻahuHawaii. The more than 3,000 steps span along Oʻahu’s Ko’olau mountain range. The pathway has been used as a hiking trail at various times but is not open to the public, it appears. The city council voted to remove the stairs in 2021.

Or did they? Based on complaints and demands of the locals, many lobbied to keep the stairs open, not only because they are a local landmark that brings tourism to the area, but that they are an accepted feature of the landscape and, also, a pleasant activity for tourists and locals. The Navy part of the story adds a fair amount of lore, intrigue and fun to the equation. And, of course, they may be there for your enjoyment and historical education.
