A day in the life of Epsom, Surrey

No, that is not a typo. It’s not meant to be Epson, the printer company. Rather, this place called Epsom is an historic town in Surrey, in the UK. Part of the “leafy Surrey” belt of towns and villages, Epsom is is in the Borough of Epsom and Ewell in Surrey, England, about 13.5 miles south of central London.

This part of the UK is busy, but not overwhelming when you visit for the first time. There are no real historical sites as such (although the city and borough are old enough.) The town is first recorded as Ebesham in the 10th century and its name probably derives from that of a Saxon landowner.

Epsom may not be as well-known as some of the larger tourist destinations in the UK, but it offers several reasons why you might consider it for a holiday. It also may not be at the top of your list, but there are some reasons that you might want to stop and visit. Epsom is located in a picturesque part of Surrey, with rolling hills and beautiful countryside. It’s a great place for outdoor activities like hiking, picnicking, and enjoying the fresh air. Epsom is famous for its racecourse, Epsom Downs, which hosts the world-famous Epsom Derby. If you’re a fan of horse racing, attending this prestigious event can be a memorable experience

If you love history, you’ll find that Epsom has a rich history dating back to Roman times. You can explore its historical sites, including Epsom Common, Ewell Castle, and Bourne Hall Museum, to learn about the town’s past. Almost all of these places are free to visit. You might recognise the name Epsom: the city is known for its natural mineral-rich waters, which have been associated with health benefits for centuries. The Epsom Salts are world-famous and are often used for relaxation and wellness purposes.

It’s easy to get to Epsom from almost anywhere in the country. Epsom is well-connected to London by train, making it a convenient base for exploring the capital city while staying in a quieter, more peaceful environment. See below for rail offers.
