When you travel, you never know what to expect, even when you scour the web, brochures and videos. It’s full of surprises. But sometimes first impressions may not be accurate.
So, when we recently visited Peru, we stayed in a variety of places, of all types. Some were supremely outfitted with beautiful design and surroundings, the latest tech, discreet but efficient staff, spectacular amenities and the most welcoming locations.
But, as often happens, the pictures are better than the reality in some places. In Puno, we stayed at a small hotel, the Qalasaya. When we first arrived at night, the hotel appeared dark and cold. First appearances didn’t fill us with confidence. But, we checked in – the staff were very accomodating and efficient. We went to our room – it was late and dark – and the room did seem to continue the impressions that we had started with. It was very basic and we wondered if we had made the right choice. But, again, we were exhausted and climbed into the bed, which was large, clean and welcoming. And, at last, we fell asleep.
When the new day dawned, we went to have breakfast (which was overflowing, fresh and delicious – one of the best we’d had in Peru.) We wondered if we were in the same building. The common areas are an riot of colour, and the views of Puno and Lake Titicaca (almost 360°) were stupendous. And the prices are almost shockingly cheap. We were wowed. Definitely check out this property.
