We’ve written some posts on Uzbekistan in the past, but sadly have not (yet!) been able to visit this beguiling (and a little bit mysterious) country. We’ve certainly done our homework and have some fleeting ideas of what to expect, but many of these impressions are rather outdated.
But that has changed. Recently, we flipped to this YouTube channel managed by Davud Akhundzada and, if you’ve ever had designs to visit this bang-up-to-date, modern and welcoming land, pull up a sofa, fire up YouTube, crack open a cold (insert beverage here) and take a walk with this kind, polite, informative and curious chap. Believe us, you’ll be amazed. Genuinely!
Much like Yan from “Little Chinese Everywhere” on You tube, David gently wanders, curious, smiling the entire time, as he unveils one gem after another. His demeanor warms up everyone he meets, and he takes the time really take in his destination. None of this loud “look at me!” Nonsense that you often find on YouTube.
Highly recommended. Tashkent was on our list, but now it’s really on our list. It’s the capital of Uzbekistan, and is a beguiling destination with a mix of historical, cultural, and modern attractions. See below for some reasons why Tashkent should really be on your list of destinations.
Khast Imam Complex: This religious center houses several mosques, madrasahs, and the famous Quran of Caliph Uthman, believed to be one of the oldest in the world.
And it’s stunning. The Chorsu Bazaar: A swirling market where you can experience the local culture, buy fresh produce, spices, and traditional crafts. Amir Timur Museum: Dedicated to the famous conqueror Timur (Tamerlane), this museum offers insights into the region’s rich history.
And one joy that we hadn’t expected was the Tashkent Metro. Known for its beautifully decorated stations, each with unique designs and themes.
As modern as any rail service, this adds another layer of fun. You’ll also find that English is spoken in many shops, hotels and restaurants, which certainly makes it easier for everyone involved.
(Don’t forget that you can use Google Translate there. Just load it on your mobile phone, add the desired languages and off you go! If it’s already on the phone, there’s no need for Wi-Fi, if it isn’t readily available. See here.
