When your editor was young, in the warm summer nights, I would be lulled to sleep by a long train, somewhere off in the distance. It came every night – it was a regular trip for the engineer, I’m sure. I can still hear the horn, the rhythmic pulse of the train tugging over the sleepers. I wondered where it was going, or how far it had to go. Was it a US train or a Canadian one? Where would it end up? Sometimes, when I was out with my parents in the daytime, I would have to wait for the train to pass. It could sometimes take five minutes or more to sizzle past us, horn blaring to an almost scary volume to the youngling that I was.
