The rocky spur of Castle Runkelstein

Here we present another of our “travel from your sofa” posts. Even just as they are, they’re always enjoyable and informative. You may just decide to view them and then secure them in your memory. Or, even better, they might spur you on to leaping from the couch, pulling out the credit card and just plunging ahead and book your trip on the spot. (We can help with that – See below.) But the best thing is to discover a little-known or unsung location that absolutely deserves your attention. And today’s gem is Runkelstein Castle, also known as Castel Roncolo.

It doesn’t always bubble up to the top of “places to go,” but if you’re one of those travelers who think for themselves, then Runkelstein Castle is for you. It’s medieval fortification on a rocky spur in the territory of Ritten, near the city of Bolzano in South Tyrol, Italy. In 1237 Alderich Prince-Bishop of Trent gave the brothers Friedrich and Beral Lords of Wangen permission to construct a castle on the rock then called Runchenstayn. It takes a little bit more effort to get to, but it’s totally worth it as, for the most part, you’ll have the place to yourself. Read more here courtesy of wikipedia.org.
