The title of this post may sound familiar to some of you, especially if you live (or lived) in the UK. To set the stage, Norwich is a city in England, up the eastern coast of the country. Like many leafy places along that way, Norwich is also a cathedral city and district of the county of Norfolk, England of which it is the county town. Norwich is by the River Wensum, about 100 mi (160 km) north-east of London, 40 mi (64 km) north of Ipswich and 65 mi (105 km) east of Peterborough.
It was once well known for its main employer in the area, The Norwich Union Insurance, which was a venerable operation, and was eventually subsumed by Aviva Insurance. But, more importantly, the building itself is the star here. It’s fantastic. It boasts a Palladian exterior and an interior adorned with 15 varieties of marble, classically inspired frescos and a glass atrium. It also contains unusual items such as an ‘air fountain’ and a chiming skeleton clock made for he Great Exhibition of 1851
Norwich itself is actually a lovely place to visit, given its location and the plethora of things to do there. But, as always, one of the things to do is to work. England has some splendid buildings (most are castles or the like) and many are “stately piles” as they’re known. But finding one that is both historic and still a work space is more rare. Which is why we were excited to happen upon this 360° video. Your editor worked there for several years and was lucky enough to enjoy visiting this most amazing space, Marble Hall, a number of times. And speaking of walk-around, you can do so in this impressive place. A nice diversion if you find yourself nearby. The building an be visited at any time or tours can be arranged ahead of time.
