Soon, there will be a new kid in town.
If all goes well, in 2023 The East African Federation (EAF,) a proposed political union of the seven sovereign states of the East African Community – Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda – will merge as a single federated sovereign state.
While all countries will retain a sovereign state, the federation will be a free trade area – much like the EU) allowing for the free movement of goods and people across borders.
The benefits are many. It would become one of the largest countries in the world by both land and population. At 4,812,618 km2 (1,858,162 sq mi), the (EAF) would be the largest country in Africa and seventh-largest in the world, replacing India. It would span across the continent from the Indian ocean to the Atlantic ocean. With a population of 281,050,447 as of March 2022, it would also be the most populous nation in Africa and fourth in the world. Its population would be greater than that of Russia, Japan, Mexico and Indonesia, behind only China, India and the United States. But even now, there is no shortage of millionaires in Africa …. see here.
It will certainly help to put Africa front and centre in the world stage, where it belongs.
