Poitou Charentes

We love France, and have done for decades: it’s probably our favourite place in Europe. It is certainly one of Europe’s best and that is only backed up by how many visitors make their way there each year. If you’re a Francophile, you’ll have your go-to locations again and again. But have you given Poitou-Charentes a try? It’s one of those regions in southwestern France, now part of the Nouvelle-Aquitaine, that is often considered a hidden treasure, but it also takes some travelers by surprise due to what it has to offer.

Poitou-Charentes. The area is often considered a hidden treasure. Unlike more famous French regions like Provence or the Riviera, Poitou-Charentes sees fewer international tourists, allowing for a more authentic and less crowded experience. That’s a big selling point, we think. In the rolling Countryside, inland, you’ll find sunflower fields, vineyards (including the Cognac region), and charming villages.

It also give you the chance to slow down and truly enjoy genuine French life: Visitors can immerse themselves in the everyday rhythm of French life, encountering local markets, traditional festivals, and a slower pace. It also boasts a stunning coastline with beautiful islands like Île de Ré, Île d’Oléron, and Île d’Aix, offering beaches, charming ports, and opportunities for watersports.
