Mostar ? Go far!

Taking rail through Bosnia and Herzegovina is one of Europe’s best-kept travel secrets. The route connecting Sarajevo and Mostar is frequently cited as one of the most beautiful and dramatic train journeys on the continent, cutting through rugged mountain canyons, emerald rivers, and extensive tunnel networks. The rail network within Bosnia is limited, but the primary corridor is highly efficient and modern. The journey is operated by the national carrier, ŽFBiH (Railways of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina), using modern, air-conditioned Talgo trains. Željeznička stanica Mostar, taking just under two hours. The line extends further south to Čapljina near the Croatian border. During the summer months (late June through August), a special weekend service runs all the way to the coastal town of Ploče in Croatia.

Tickets are inexpensive (around 14 BAM / €7 one-way for second class). While reservations can be initiated online via the official ŽFBiH website, the digital platform issues a confirmation code rather than a live ticket. You must present this confirmation code (along with identification) at the station ticket counter to collect your physical paper boarding ticket. It is highly recommended to arrive at the station at least 45 to 60 minutes before departure to avoid queues. One thing to keep in mind is that the old battles and cruelty are long gone and it’s a place where peace prevails, locals are wonderful and welcoming and you will be so glad you went.
