More is more? The London Underground’s Over-Designed Stations.

In the world of transit architecture, “over-designed” is a term often used by critics to describe spaces where the aesthetic ambition feels disproportionate to the simple act of catching a train. For the London Underground (the “Tube”), this phenomenon is usually a deliberate reaction to the cramped, utilitarian designs of the past. The most common targets for the “over-designed” label are the stations on the Jubilee Line Extension (JLE), opened in 1999. Led by architect Roland Paoletti, these stations were designed by world-renowned firms like Norman Foster and Michael Hopkins. Future-Proofing vs. Excess: Stations like Canary Wharf and Westminster are gargantuan. Canary Wharf is famously large enough to fit the One Canada Square skyscraper inside if it were laid on its side. Critics argue these cavernous concrete voids are “over-designed” because they prioritize architectural “drama” over intimacy.

The “Anti-Victoria” Reaction: This era was a direct rebellion against the Victoria Line (1960s), which was built on a tight budget with narrow platforms and low ceilings. The JLE designers wanted to ensure that no passenger would ever feel claustrophobic again, leading to “over-sized” halls and brutalist concrete “spaceships.”

If you have the time and the alertness, you’ll find Tube stations almost everywhere in London. Above and below ground. Many are breathtaking. Thank you, Victorians!

Hove Rail station, near Brighton station, is a beautiful example of Beautiful Victorian excess.
