Sigh. The more things change, the more they change, if you know what we mean. And not always better, we reckon. When you travel from location to location, inevitably, you have expectations. You ponder them, think about them and, perchance, even dream about them. Maybe it’s our lineage, but when we we think of certain places, we want them to thrive and grow, but sometimes not too much. And this post’s focus is on London, our fave city on the planet. Everchanging and never changing at the same time.
But, let us dwell in the past for now, as yet another London highlight is subsumed by the unstoppable march of commerce, The Post Office Tower of London. Now known as The BT Tower, located in Fitzrovia, London, was previously known as the Post Office Tower and the British Telecom Tower. It was officially opened in 1965 and served as the headquarters of the General Post Office (GPO) and later the British Telecommunications (BT) company. And it’s towering (literally) height has always been not only a beacon, but also as a landmark.
Initially, one if its joys was the tower that had an observation deck and a rotating restaurant on its 34th floor, providing panoramic views of London. However, the public access to these facilities was closed in 1980 due to security concerns.
It’s had its ups and downs of owners, with the typical clumsy handoffs, but now – this time – it’s being handed off to developers who will turn it into swanky apartments and shops. We may never get to see inside again.
Finally, though, while the BT Tower itself is not directly associated with the traditional postal services provided by the Post Office, it remains an iconic structure in London’s skyline with its distinctive cylindrical shape and serves as a crucial hub for communication services in the city. Farewell, old friend. Go walk around and say hello . . and au revoir while you can.
