Kosovo is a place that most of us have heard of, but may know little about. We might recall that there were troubles, many based around it unilaterally declaring its independence from Serbia on 17 February 2008. And or course, situations like that (with the associated violence that inevitably occurs) can often cast a pall over a place and its people, which sometimes takes decades to correct and progress: look at Serbia as an example.
Well, happily, much like Serbia, Kosovo finally will have its day in the sun, as European Union lawmakers gave the green light for citizens from Kosovo to travel freely in Europe without visas from next year. This is great news for every world traveler who wants something new in their plans.
For background, Kosovo is a state in Southeast Europe. It lies at the centre of the Balkans. Kosovo unilaterally declared its independence from Serbia on 17 February 2008, and has since gained diplomatic recognition as a sovereign state by 101 member states of the United Nations. It is bordered by Serbia to the north and east, North Macedonia to the southeast, Albania to the southwest, and Montenegro to the west. Most of central Kosovo is dominated by the vast plains and fields of Metohija and Kosovo field. The Accursed Mountains and Šar Mountains rise in the southwest and southeast, respectively. Its capital and largest city is Prishtinë.
And, as ever, it awaits your visit. Shake off any Cold War images that might linger and open your eyes to a place that is open to you. (Some content courtesy of Wikipedia.)
