There are few places to travel as beguiling and appealing as China. Where do you even start? Well, one place to focus is trying to understand the Chinese language. Like anywhere in the world when you travel, knowing even a little bit of the language is not only helpful, but it’s also a signal that you’re willing to try: it’s no surprise that the native speakers appreciate your efforts. Nowadays, of course, we are blessed with tools like Google Translate that not only allows us to swap one language for another, but it can also read signs and translate them real-time. Think back a few decades ago and we didn’t have such lifesavers even for Spanish or French. But, now we can breeze from one place to another, translating our hearts away with the only worries being battery life and Wi-Fi. But, again, with Google Translate you can download the desired languages to your phone – one less worry when you’re away.
But, back to Chinese. What if you want to go the whole nine yards and truly understand and be able to read the language? Watch the video below to turbo-charge your next new language.
To get going, start with Pinyin: Pinyin is a phonetic system that uses Roman letters to represent the pronunciation of Chinese characters. It’s a great starting point for beginners to familiarize themselves with the sounds of Mandarin Chinese. Start with simple characters: Begin by learning simple characters that are frequently used in everyday life. Gradually increase the complexity as you become more comfortable. Flashcards, textbooks, or online resources can be helpful for practicing character recognition.
