Keeping it real in Lille.

In our purview, at least, France is one of those countries where you can’t get enough of it, and there is more than enough to keep you busy for weeks if not months. From places like Entebbe, to the iconic capital, Paris, for its museums and landmarks, the glamorous French Riviera with cities like Nice and Cannes, and the picturesque Loire Valley known for its chateaux. Other top destinations include the historic region of Normandy, the wine region of Bordeaux, and the unique alpine beauty of the French Alps.  And it is easily accessible: no rock climbing necessary, unless you want it, of course.

Lille, with its blend of French and Flemish influences, offers a rich and varied experience that is perfectly suited for the mature traveler. The city is highly walkable, boasts world-class art, and has a rich, unique gastronomy scene. Here are some of the top things to do in Lille:

Immerse Yourself in Vieux-Lille (The Old Town)
The historic quarter is the heart of Lille’s charm and the ideal place for a leisurely stroll. The architecture is a beautiful mix of French classicism and colorful Flemish Baroque, with charming cobblestone streets (be sure to wear comfortable shoes!) La Grande Place (Place du Général de Gaulle): Start at the magnificent central square, surrounded by ornate 17th-century architecture. It’s the perfect spot for coffee and people-watching.

La Vieille Bourse: Just off the main square, this stunning 17th-century former stock exchange is an architectural gem. Inside its beautiful courtyard, you’ll find a lively second-hand book and antique market held every day except Monday, a lovely place to browse for unique souvenirs.

Rue de la Monnaie and Rue de Gand: Wander these picturesque streets, which are home to boutiques, specialty shops, and many of the city’s traditional restaurants. Hospice Comtesse Museum: Located in the Old Town, this former 13th-century hospice is now a museum that offers a quiet look into the history of Lille with its beautiful wooden furniture and collections. La Piscine Museum (in Roubaix): This is one of the most highly recommended day trips from Lille (a short ride by public transport). It’s an Art Deco former public swimming pool beautifully converted into a museum of art and industry. The space itself, with its stained glass and pool basin, is as impressive as the collection it holds.

These are just a a few examples about why Lille might just end up as one of your top travel locations, not only in France, but perhaps even on the planet. And, as a special suggestion, finish your holiday in authentic Paris. Stay at the Hotel du Champ de Mars, on Rue Cler. Click here
