It’s not soccer, it’s Football. Wait, it’s called rugby. Or is it?

Calling all of you rabid sports addicts. We here at Matouring are not only about statues and history. We love sport just as much as anybody else. So why is it that one of the absolute best games is rugby. The players are built like statues: they’re huge and scary looking, for sure, but off the pitch, they’re some of the biggest softies you can find. Take it from me, a softy: my father was a rugby player and it’s one of the most exciting games out there.

"Auckland may be large and brash, bursting at its narrow seams, a confusion of places and of people, but with the sea at its door, it'll always be a pleasant place to live."

Rugby is a high-octane, full-contact team sport that originated in England in the early 19th century. It’s often described as a game of “controlled chaos,” where physical power meets chess-like strategy.

Unlike sports that stop and start constantly, rugby is known for its fluidity—once the whistle blows, the action is relentless. t its core, rugby is about carrying an oval ball across the opponent’s goal line to score a try. The Golden Rule: You can run forward and kick forward, but you can only pass the ball backward or sideways.

Continuous Play: When a player is tackled, the game doesn’t stop. They must release the ball, and teammates from both sides compete for possession in a “ruck.” The Set Pieces: You’ve likely seen the Scrum (where players bind together and push) and the Lineout (where players are hoisted into the air to catch a throw). These are unique restarts that turn a physical contest into an art form. Whether you have an interest in rugby or not, this emotive, guided experience allows guests to connect with New Zealand, Māori culture and gain insights into Kiwi lifestyle, attitude and humour.
