I’ll Stop the world & Melt with you

. . . . it’s a part of history! . . . and we must do something about it. But this particular piece of history is especially prickly, as this beautiful stately pile is slowly melting. The “melting” of Hill House in the UK refers to the conservation challenges faced by this historic building, particularly due to moisture and weathering issues. Hill House is a renowned building designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh, located in Helensburgh, Scotland. It has faced significant problems with water penetration, which has led to deterioration of the building’s fabric.

To address these issues, the National Trust for Scotland undertook an innovative conservation project. They constructed a large, protective enclosure around Hill House, often referred to as the “Hill House Box,” to shield the building from the elements while allowing it to dry out. This semi-permeable “box” is designed to protect the building from further water damage and give conservators the time and conditions needed to carry out necessary repairs and restoration work. For those not aware, Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1868-1928) was a Scottish architect, designer, watercolourist, and artist. He was a prominent figure in the Arts and Crafts Movement and later became a significant proponent of Art Nouveau in the UK. Mackintosh is best known for his distinctive style, which combined traditional Scottish design with modern influences, creating a unique blend of simplicity, elegance, and functionalism. If you know Frank Lloyd Wright, you will recognize the ethos and the way of working. Learn more here.
