Having once had pilot’s training, I can assure you that it’s not what you see in the movies. Chances are very good that your average Joe will not be able to simply walk up the aisle of an Airbus A320, open the cabin door and even simply understand the bedazzling array of dials, gauges, switches and alarms that proper pilots must contend with every day. So, best to stay in your seats when the pilots and crew say so.
Just for starters, you will need at least 1500 hours of experience to get certified, which can be earned in two years if you’re very diligent and adept. In addition, you’ll also need 1500 hours of experience, which can be earned in two years. You also may need to pay up to $84,000 for your basic training, and that could take up to five months or more to complete. Starting to lose your appetite? That’ probably a good thing. Sorry to dash your dreams.
So let’s step back a bit and see what it’s like to fly a flight simulator instead. The experience is frighteningly similar to what would be the real thing, and you must be on your toes. So watch as the always eyes-wide -open Tom Scott does his best in flying an Airbus. As calm as he always is, he comes’ out shaking like a leaf, even if Mentour Pilot is guiding him the whole way.
Don’t forget to thank your crew when you disembark.
