The Ferrovia Circumetnea (FCE)—the historic, narrow-gauge railway that encircles the base of Mount Etna—is one of the most remarkable slow-travel experiences in Europe. Operating since 1895, this 110-kilometer route doesn’t climb to the summit crater; instead, it loops around the slopes of Europe’s largest active volcano at speeds of roughly 30 km/h, offering a perspective of Etna that standard tours completely miss. As the train winds around the volcano’s base, the view out your
window transforms every 15 to 20 minutes. Black Lava Fields: The track cuts directly through fields of petrified basalt, including fresh-looking black flows from past eruptions (such as the 1981 eruption near Randazzo, which buried parts of the original railway). Fertile Agricultural Belts: Thanks to the rich volcanic soil, you glide past terraced vineyards (home to famous Etna DOC wines), lemon and orange groves, and wild prickly pear cacti clinging to lava rock. Forests to Coast: On the northern and eastern slopes, Forests to Coast: On the northern and eastern slopes, the scenery softens into dense chestnut woods before opening up to sweeping views of the blue Ionian Sea.
