Going underground

Don’t be afraid of the dark. We humans have found a way to conjure up almost any scenario, whether real, imminent or purely fictional. “The end is nigh!” “We only have X number of days on this planet before it implodes!” Well, in our opinion, so far, so good – we’re still here in one piece – although with the way that we’re treating Mother Earth at this moment in time it does not bode well. Fires, floods, formerly abundant lakes going dry: we need to wake up, and fast.

Fortunately, there are those who see and prepare for these oncoming catastrophes. It’s not like this kind of apocalypse has hasn’t happened before. And, when it comes to common sense and clear thinking, who is better at it than the wise, calm and prescient people of the Nordic countries of Europe. Not only have they been sitting atop of geysers and volcanoes for millennia, they also are at the coal face of the current Cold War that the Old World is staring down, yet again.

In Helsinki, they have been thinking about this for decades, to the point where they have constructed tunnels and passages through the rock to make sure that they were prepared. The passages were originally meant for power lines and sewers, but the excavators soon realized this underground infrastructure could be used for much more. They laid the groundwork required to house a population within its cold tunnels.

But that doesn’t mean that its a barren wasteland. How does a shopping mall, go-kart track and swimming pool sound, as well? And, you can wander around in parts of it, too.
