Get it on, Cézanne

Aix-en-Provence. It’s easy to see why the chic town in the south of France made such an impression on the famous artist. The city itself is stunning, as was the art of Cézanne and his contemporaries, such as Camille Pissarro, Claude Monet, and Auguste Renoir. They lived in a time when the tight-lipped values of the 1800’s, were being questioned by a brave – and sometimes ridiculed – new wave of artists; those we mentioned above. Art, music and individualist freedom began to explode. They paved the way for the art that we see today, art that is not ridiculed or set ablaze by dull or unaware conformists.

Provence is for you

Happily, the colour and the life and the joie-de-vivre has not escaped that luscious part of La Belle France. So why not make a date with yourself (and your significant other) to fly away, take a seat at a cafe, and watch the world go by. As we say, start slowly, then taper off.  It can be hot at time – literally – sometimes up to 29c in the summer, but there are so many parks and fountains, you can usually find a way to escape. And, for most of the year, it will be a buzzy atmosphere thanks to the university with over 80,000 students. And there are walking and hiking trails surrounding the town, including Mont Sainte-Victoire, the jagged peak that rises to 3,300ft to the east of the city. Plus, simply telling your friends and family that you’re off to Aix for a few weeks is thrilling enough.
