As tax-paying citizens, we like to see our money spent wisely (ha!) but this USA governmental folly really is somewhat laughable now, and we assume that there is / was a valid reason to do this. Welcome to the landing strip known as Dade-Collier Training and Transition Airport. It is operated by the Miami Dade Aviation Department, which oversees four other more credible (and busy) airports in the area, including Miami International – which is the third largest in the United States for managing international passenger traffic.
The whole thing seems a bit silly now, but there was a purpose at the time, and, as you’ll all know, Miami is a rather popular place to be. In fact, There are over 80 airlines serving MIA to approximately 150 destinations around the globe. As of 2021, it is the 10th busiest airport in the U.S. with 17,500,096 passengers for the year. It is Florida’s busiest airport by total aircraft operations. And, lest you think that is yet more government waste, at least now it’s a training airport for Cessna and Piper aircraft pilots and pilot wannabees.
