From trails to rails: East Africa

Periodically, it’s good to refresh our knowledge and perceptions when it comes to travel: things change so quickly! What was once antiquated, forlorn and sketchy has since turned into a bright light of how humans get things done. One recent example is rail in East Africa. They have really taken the bull by the horns and dramatically updated their modes of getting around. (For reference, East Africa, Eastern Africa, or East of Africa is the eastern subregion of the African continent.) In the United Nations Statistics Division scheme of geographic regions, 10-11- territories make up Eastern Africa.

East African countries have been busy investing in the improvement and expansion of transportation infrastructure. This includes the construction and rehabilitation of roads, bridges, and airports to enhance connectivity within and between countries. Some East African countries have been investing in railway projects to improve the efficiency and speed of transportation. For instance, the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) project in Kenya aimed to connect major cities and ports, facilitating the movement of goods and people. Maybe it’s time for us all to take another look at East Africa as a place to visit.
