Yes, you read that right: it’s no typo. And it’s not a baking contest as well. So what is it? The annual festival of Els Enfarinats takes place in the town of Ibi in Alicante, Spain on December 28, as part of celebrations related to the Day of the Innocents. Els enfarinats comes from the Valencian word for “breading”, and roughly translate to “the breaded ones” or “the floured ones”. And that’s exactly what this is. And it’s hilarious.
It will be happening again – in Ibi Spain on December 28, so book your holiday rental, take some old clothes and behold a festival that you will want to – but won’t be able to – share with your friends and family – it’s hard to explain. Book a room nearby, and brace yourself. This chaotic scene takes the concept of a food fight to a whole new level. Revellers from the southeastern Spanish town of Ibi were caught on camera on Wednesday as they celebrated a quirky 200-year-old festival known as Els Enfarinats. The traditional get-together requires participants to dress in military garb and stage a mock takeover using flour, eggs and firecrackers in lieu of weapons. As expected, things quickly got messy, with attendees wandering the cobbles with their clothing coated in a crust of soggy batter. (some content courtesy of DailyMail.co.uk)
Luckily, it returns to beautiful Alicante again with blooming flours and unforgettable memories.
