It’s been a long time coming, but The Grand Egyptian Museum and Giza Pyramids museum is now open and, wow, is it amazing. The Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) took approximately 20 years to complete from the start of construction to its final opening. While the concept was first proposed in 1992, the actual journey from groundbreaking to the official ceremony in November 2025 was marked by decades of political and global shifts. It is worth the wait. The two-decade build time earned it the nickname “The New Pyramid,” as many pointed out it took roughly the same amount of time to build as the Great Pyramid of Giza. The delays were driven by Political Turmoil: The 2011 Arab Spring and subsequent government changes stalled funding and oversight The 2008 Financial Crisis: Impacted international loans and budget allocations.
COVID-19 Pandemic: Caused a total halt in 2020 just as the museum was nearing its “finished” state. Regional Instability: Even in early 2025, the opening was pushed back one last time due to security concerns in the Middle East. That’s quite a whammy for any organisation to overcome.
