Mega-ships are limited by draft depth, air draft (bridge clearances), and strict municipal caps designed to combat overtourism. As cities like Venice, Amsterdam, and Santorini restrict or ban giant liners, small vessels retain an enormous logistical edge: Tender-Free Anchorage: When anchoring off iconic cliffside destinations like Amalfi, Portofino,
or the smaller Greek Cyclades, smaller vessels eliminate the grueling 45-minute tender boat lines required to ferry thousands of passengers ashore. Heart-of-the-City Docking: Smaller ships can sail up rivers and slip into historic harbors. You can moor right along the quayside in Seville via the Guadalquivir River, pull directly into the inner port of Monaco, or dock steps from the old town in Dubrovnik, Bordeaux, or Hafnarfjörður. No Industrial Industrial Ports: Mega-ships often dock in remote container freight hubs (such as Civitavecchia for Rome or Livorno for Florence), requiring 60 to 90 minutes of coach transit each way. Boutique ships dock where the action is, letting you walk straight off the gangway into a cobblestone piazza.
