We like to present the unusual when we can, as well as the standard favourite spots around the globe, of course. Sometimes these locations are famous or – in this case – infamous in that they’re featured because they might be considered unfortunate. This post is about a place in Colombia, a country that’s had its fair share of trouble over the decades. (we want to state here – emphatically – that when you visit the right places and behave like a responsible adult, Colombia is a fantastic destination.)
Here, we talk about a town in Colombia that was not so fortunate. On 13 November 1985, the dormant Nevado del Ruiz volcano erupted, killing more than 25,000 people in Armero—a town of 30,000 inhabitants—making it the worst natural disaster in the history of Colombia. The town has not been able to fully recover, but, as you’ll see in the video, they continue to live their lives in the shadow of the volcano, but with a different approach than before.
Some may ask why Armero is being discussed here, in a travel site. As you watch the video, the residents of the town want to tell the story. They want people to hear it and, most of all, see it. You may feel some trepidation about visiting a place like this, but the locals will be delighted to see you. And, Colombian people are some of the nicest and warmest people you’ll ever meet. Give Armero a chance. You won’t forget it.
