Ancient America

When most people think of America (in this usage of the word, we mean the USA) they generally don’t think about ancient ruins. The United States, as of this writing, is old, to be sure: 246 years old. But that is a drop in the bucket compared to some: The oldest recorded civilization in the world is Mesopotamia, 4000-3500 B.C. Do the maths and you’ll see that America is just a babe in swaddling clothes. But that doesn’t mean that it lacks antiquity and/or evidence of that. And you may be wondering how to compare and contrast civilisations in order to make a comparison. One way is to spend hours researching the topic (let us know how you get on.) Or, you can trust the experts. And who is more expert in ancient history than UNESCO? So, it’s safe to say that when a  civilisation is annointed by that honourable group, you know it means something.

So, were you aware that the USA has no less than five UNESCO-designated sites. One of those, Taos Pueblo, situated in the valley of a small tributary of the Rio Grande, is an adobe settlement – consisting of dwellings and ceremonial buildings and represents the culture of the Pueblo Indians of Arizona and New Mexico. aos Pueblo has been continuously inhabited and is the largest of these Pueblos that still exist, with its North and South Houses rising to heights of five storeys. Taos Pueblo and the people of the Pueblo itself claim an aboriginal presence in the Taos Valley since time immemorial. Read more here, courtesy of UNESCO, and, of course, go visit!
