All Those Years Ago

It’s not often when you have a chance to get a glimpse into history in the making, especially history that is as profound as this story is. This is a little-known tale about one of our heroes, and probably yours, too – George Harrison of The Beatles. They need no introduction, so we’ll skip to the meat of the story. George (and the rest of The Fab Four) were not always famous. They worked for years, playing in small clubs, traveling to Hamburg, where they found the receptive audience that had alluded them in the UK. Night after night, they honed their craft to become the band that. after being polished with suits and haircuts by manager Brian Epstein, exploded into – to us, anyway – the best band ever.

But, go back to just before that, there was a little detour. Needing a break from touring and recording, in September Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr visited Greece. John Lennon and his wife went to Paris. George visited Benton, Illinois, USA (pop. 7,000) Why? Well, George’s sister lived there. Only a few months later, he was back in Europe and . . . well, you know the rest. Click here to read more courtesy of The Smithsonian Magazine.
