If you’re the nervous type when you drive, especially around town, this post is mostly not for you. Even if you consider yourself to be Speed Racer, you may want to think twice. And even if you think you’re a local when you drive in Europe (in this case, Spain) you’ll really want to think twice before you hire your car and head off on this journey through La Cuevona de Cuevas del Agua.
La Cuevona de Cuevas del Agua is a natural cave located in the Asturias region of northern Spain. It is known for being one of the few caves in the world that allows vehicular traffic to pass through it. The cave is situated near the town of Cuevas del Agua, and it is a popular tourist attraction due to its unique characteristics.
The cave is formed by the natural erosion of limestone rock by the waters of the Rio Agüa. It has a length of about 300 meters and a height of around 20 meters, making it quite spacious. The road that passes through the cave is part of the AS-114 highway, and it provides a scenic route through the Picos de Europa National Park.
Traveling through La Cuevona de Cuevas del Agua is a fascinating experience, as visitors can drive through the darkened tunnel while being surrounded by the impressive rock formations. The cave is well-lit to enhance the visibility for drivers and to showcase the unique geological features of the interior.
Its windy, sometimes dark, sometimes unnerving (especially if another local comes careening around the bend at full velocity) but its mesmerizing at the same time.
