We here at Matouring often long fondly for The Canary Islands. Just off the coast of Spain, the eight main islands are (from largest to smallest in area) Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, La Palma, La Gomera, El Hierro and La Graciosa. Certainly, they are a destination for almost anyone who loves the sea, rugged coastlines, quaint villages and hearty Spanish cuisine – especially – seafood.
But, as is usually the case, we tourists often tread over the lands that were once thriving with sizable populations that have since blown to the winds of time. One such band of people are the Guanches.
The Guanches were the first known inhabitants of the Canary Islands, but their true origins have baffled archaeologists. Their mummification rituals saw them linked to the Ancient Egyptians, and some legends suggested they could even have been surviving inhabitants of Atlantis.
New scientific evidence, however, may have found the truth. Read more and learn more courtesy of the BBC
