Safaris used be rather dangerous and – in the case of the animals – deadly propositions. Men with names like George or Nigel would take a steam liner to Africa from one of the colonies, with their pipes, rifles and maps in hand. Sleeping rough in tents, they would spend the night regaling each other with stories about their escapades from here and there. They would lull themselves to sleep (courtesy of fine whiskies,) fall asleep and, then, wake up with the dawn, ready to bring back some souvenirs – usually various parts of elephants, lions and cheetahs. It was not for just anyone, to be sure.
But, happily, those days have changed and we’ve learned much in the decades since. You can still go on safari, but the only shooting involves using your camera.
May we commend the Ngutuni and Salt Lick two-day safari? Day one: after an early breakfast at your hotel, you will drive, accompanied by your driver, along the main highway that heads towards Nairobi, following the route of the railway line built by the British in the late nineteenth century. You will then arrive at the Ngutuni Safari Lodge and adventure on a drive through the game sanctuary that confines with the Tsavo East National Park. The lunch and the afternoon will continue at the Taita Hills Sanctuary arriving afterward at the Salt Lick Lodge which is built on stilts overlooking a waterhole where animals come to drink. The Sanctuary hosts a variety of species of birds and animals, including lions, elephants, giraffes and zebras. Dinner and the overnight stay will be at the Salt Lick Resort.
