As statistics show again and again, flying is the safest way to travel, by far. Northwestern University’s Ian Savage complied facts that back this up. Savage aggregated fatality statistics from 2000 to 2009 and then expressed them for different transportation methods in terms of deaths per billion passenger miles traveled.
The main finding: Automobiles are one of the most deadly ways to get from Point A to Point B, with 7.28 deaths for every billion passenger miles. (See the chart below.)
But here’s a story about a bird strike while accelerating during its takeoff roll. Were the birds angry that day, or just too lazy to get out of the way. We’ll never know – they weren’t interviewed afterwards. Happily for the humans, everyone was fine.
