Trip the light tram-tastic

Man, if there is anything that will get us more excited than trains and planes, it has to be trams. Sad, I know. They’re not everywhere, and that’s the thing that makes them so beguiling. Thus, being able to find one and ride one is an absolute thrill for transport geeks like us.

We wish the planet was populated with more of them. And there are a few places in the world that do trams like Hong Kong. Wonderful, colourful, old and perhaps battered (which is not a bad thing) and used every single day by thousands of people – if not more.

This is something that has to be known and cherished for transport aficionados. BTW, if you are a dyed-in-the-wool aficionado, watch the full-length 1: hour 16: minute tour through town. Complete Hong Kong Tramway Tour (Ding Ding!) – Wide Angle and 4K. Worth every minute for true history and lots of fun.

The trams in Hong Kong, affectionately known as the “Ding Ding” due to the sound of their bells, are indeed deeply loved and venerated by locals and visitors alike. This isn’t just about nostalgia; it’s a combination of their unique characteristics, historical significance, and the practical role they play in the city’s identity.

The World’s Only Entirely Double-Decker Tram Fleet: This is their most distinctive and unique feature. While other cities might have a few double-decker trams for tourist rides, Hong Kong Tramways operates a fleet of 165 double-decker trams for daily public transport. This makes them a visually striking and truly unique sight on the streets, unlike any other tram system in the world. Watch above to “start your tour.”
