When you think of old-style mobsters, you usually think of New York City, where almost all crime happens in American cinema. But, Chicago Illinois had its run of criminals, especially in the 1930’s. People like “Al” Capone, John Dillinger, “Baby Face” Nelson…. the list goes on and on.
There is still an element of romance with that troubled period of American history, for the most part it is just that: history. But, if you know where to look, you can still find the smoky hangouts where the tough guys used to frequent.
One of which is Chicago’s Green Mill. Now a hip jazz and blues club, the interior hasn’t changed much – thank goodness. Frequented by people of all colours and all persuations, the vibe is always “just right”, the drinks selection fills an entire wall, and you really do feel like you’ve time-traveled five decades into the past.
Go visit – make the effort: it’s truly worth it. Especially the secret trap door behind counter, where dames and mugs used to high-tail it away from the coppers.
