Of course, everywhere on the planet holds some of our favourite places – that’s a natural. But, sometimes, maybe as part of proximity, or accessibility or even nostalgia, we sometimes find ourselves drawn to a place that makes us want to return again and again, but – when we actually sit down and think about it – we don’t really know why. We know you know what we’re talking about.
And, in this post. we’re talking about a place called Box Hill. Box Hill is a summit of the North Downs in Surrey, UK approximately 31 km south-west of London. The hill gets its name from the ancient box woodland found on the steepest west-facing chalk slopes overlooking the River Mole. That’s a cursory explanation, but one of the things that attracts people to Box Hill is that it’s one of the (very) few hills in that part of what is generally a flat landscape. But, it’s a landscape that hides some treasures.
It’s easy to get there. UK National Rail can take you from London (and beyond) to Box Hill Station. From there, you can wander up Box Hill itself, admire the vistas and then commence into a much longer jaunt. It’s quiet, pretty and relaxing.
The old station at Box Hill is lovely, and well-maintained. Wander around a bit.
