With all of the dozens and hundreds of countries and cities in the world, you’d think that we’d run out of places to learn about and to explore. Countries are one thing, but imagine having the funds and the oomph to actually want to visit all of their cities. We always look in the mirror every morning to know just how lucky we are, but we also ponder about how many more we’ve missed. So, as we do, we looked into it to see what we’ve seen or to see what we’re missing? This could end up being a regular feature on the site, so look sharp. Fair dinkum in this case.

Feeling hot, hot, hot? Welcome to Coober Pedy, Australia. A significant portion of Coober Pedy’s residents live, work, and even worship underground in “dugouts” to escape the extreme desert temperatures. Exploring these underground homes, hotels, shops, and churches offers a surreal and cool respite from the harsh surface environment. If you have the guts to visit, you can discover the ingenious way people have carved out comfortable and spacious living spaces from the sandstone. Some underground homes are surprisingly elaborate. Talk about lying low.
