When we hear the word UNESCO, it always gives us the feeling that the world, despite its fires, and bombs and hatred, we humans will do the right thing – which means turn things around as they are now – and come to our senses. It is a long uphill struggle, but one day, common sense will prevail. To that end, were you aware of UNESCO Global Geoparks? Only one example, Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark, formerly Hong Kong National Geopark, was inaugurated on 3 November 2009. It is a single entity of land area over 150 km² across parts of the eastern and northeastern New Territories. On 18 September 2011, UNESCO listed the geopark as part of its Global Geoparks Network.

UNESCO Global Geoparks provide a framework for conserving internationally significant geological heritage while promoting sustainable development, education, and community engagement. They foster economic growth through geotourism, strengthen community resilience to geological hazards, and serve as platforms for research and education on earth science and climate change. These areas connect a region’s natural and cultural heritage to societal challenges. This can only be a good thing.
