Americans love concocting phrases. For example, how about The middle of nowhere: This is a classic, universally understood to mean a remote, isolated place that is far from any town or city. It implies that the place is desolate and lacks any notable features. When you hear “Tri” something, that means three. “Tri-state area for example.”

Here’s another one: The sticks: A more casual and sometimes slightly derogatory way to describe a rural or remote area. “I grew up in the sticks” implies a simple, country upbringing. Here’s a doozy (actually, that was a doozy) – A concrete jungle: A common metaphor for a dense, busy city with many tall buildings and a lack of green spaces, like New York City. It can be used to imply both excitement and overwhelming chaos.

Anyway, we guess that you get it. The US is not the only place to extol this kind of behavior, but they do use it to the max. So what is this post all about? We were staying with family in the Seattle area and one of the members mentioned the Tri Cities, as they were contemplating moving there. We’d never heard of it but, hey ho. So, to the point.
The Tri-Cities are three closely linked cities at the confluence of the Yakima, Snake, and Columbia Rivers in the U.S. state of Washington. Located in the Columbia Basin of Eastern Washington, the cities border one another, making the Tri-Cities seem like one uninterrupted mid-sized city. Seattle is the one that gets most off the attention, but stick around if you have the time to explore the rest.

History abounds in that part of the world. Native Americans have populated the Pacific Northwest since at least 8,000 BCE and possibly even earlier, with some sources indicating a presence around 16,000 years before the present. Early inhabitants arrived from Asia through the Bering Strait and along a coastal route. By 1500 BCE, sophisticated societies had developed, marked by coastal trade and advanced hunting and fishing techniques, which supported significant population growth. The Cities await you.
