Without sounding like we’re preaching, or stating the obvious, but the fact that you, our wonderful readers, are looking at this article says a lot about you, and certainly something about us, Matouring.
Visiting Venice or Rio are undoubtedly some of the most thrilling things we can do in our lives. But, sometimes (more often than not) there are stories behind the scenes that cast a different shade.
One such is Cambodia, specifically in Phnom Penh. You may recall the systematic persecution and killing of Cambodians by the Khmer Rouge under the leadership of Communist Party of Kampuchea general secretary Pol Pot.
His efforts resulted in the deaths of 1.5 to 2 million people from 1975 to 1979, nearly a quarter of Cambodia’s 1975 population.
But, with that horrible history behind us, we can learn and also support the Cambodian people by visiting the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, a former high school that served as a torture and detention center, which documents their atrocities through films, photos, and artifacts.
Please do.
