The Venerable Impenetrable

UPDATED. Forget your F16 fighters, your advanced weaponry, electronic warfare, cyber warfare, and information warfare. You know nothing. Ancient technologists would just laugh you out into the street. When you watch the video above, you’ll see what we mean and you will certainly be humbled. Meet The Murud-Janjira fort in Maharashtra, India.

The Murud-Janjira Fort, located on an island off the coast of Murud in Maharashtra, India, has a deep and dazzling history that makes it one of the most significant and celebrated sea forts in the country. It is famous for one remarkable fact: it was never conquered by any enemy, including the Marathas, Mughals, Portuguese, and British. The origins of the fort date back to the 15th century. It was initially a small wooden garrison built by a local fisherman chieftain named Raja Ram Rao Patil of the Koli community. Its purpose was to protect the local people from pirates.

The Nizam Shahi Sultan of the Ahmednagar Sultanate, recognizing the strategic importance of the island, wanted to capture it. His general, Piram Khan, used a cunning trick: he disguised himself and his soldiers as liquor merchants and gained entry to the fort. Once inside, they launched a surprise attack and seized control. The good thing is that this diamond is still there. One thing to keep in mind is that tourists cannot visit the island, only with approved tours.
