Can you guess what “The KL” is? No, not some here-today gone-tomorrow hip-hop band. And not some hopeful moniker for a forlorn small town in Kansas. It’s the playful (and much easier to pronounce) nickname that the residents of Kuala Lumpur use to refer to their lovely and largely unsung country.
For a refresher, Kuala Lumpur is the capital of Malaysia. Its modern skyline is dominated by the 451m-tall Petronas Twin Towers, a pair of glass-and-steel-clad skyscrapers with Islamic motifs. The towers also offer a public skybridge and observation deck. The city is also home to British colonial-era landmarks such as the Kuala Lumpur Railway Station and the Sultan Abdul Samad Building.
And it’s one of those places that, once you arrive, you will wonder how you didn’t know more about it, and why you haven’t been there before. It is bang up-to-date when it comes to being a powerhouse technologically, and is also leading the charge on green initiatives.
Another reason why you’ll enjoy visiting is that charming people, comprised of Malay/Bumiputera: 45.9%, Chinese: 43.2%, Indians: 10.3%, Other: 1.6%, make it a true melting pot. English widely spoken and the people are an open book. Get going!
See the dramatic cityscape of Kuala Lumpur from its tallest set of buildings with a skip-the-line ticket to the iconic Petronas Twin Towers, designed by architect César Pelli.
